Mother Nature never ceases to surprise us and in some cases, these surprises are pleasant ones as made evident in this story. Recently a group of whale watchers were paid a visit by a cheeky grey whale who popped out of the water sneakily right behind the observers. They were glad as well as equally surprised by this unexpected visit.
Award-winning independent photographer, director, and designer named E. Smith captured this moment on camera and shared the images on Instagram for the whole world to see. These images garnered a lot of attention on social media platforms because it is rare to come across such a sight. Smith capturing these beautiful images was no coincidence because he was well aware of the sneaky behavior of whales.
Every morning enthusiastic whale watchers travel on motorboats named pangas with the intention of catching a glimpse of these majestic creatures.
The sightseers from Campo Cortez in Baja were impatiently awaiting a visit from a whale when a grey whale calf appeared near the bow of the boat, making the whale watchers look forward. A moment later the mother whale made an appearance behind the stern and such sneaky behavior is referred to as “spy hop”.
The mother grey whale successfully snuck up behind the whale watchers making them cheer and burst into peals of laughter. “I mean… she’s totally posing. No two ways about it. The grey whales of Baja are something else,” Smith conveyed. These images managed to lighten up the photographer’s mood as well.
Smith also highlighted the importance of having a camera with you at all times because you never know when chance will present you with an opportunity to capture a rare occasion such as this. “I’d rather be ready to make an image of a great moment than have it fade from my memory,” the photographer further conveyed.
