The usage of non-biodegradable substances and their effect on the biodiversity of our planet has raised critical discussions by now. Humans no longer control the lives of all other beings on earth but in a ruthless mission to eradicate their existence and the irony is that if plants and animals cease to exist, humans will also have to face the same destiny. Nevertheless, every day we can hear about how animals and plants are being polluted and misused by humans. In this light, the vegan leather created by two Mexico guys will surely be new hope for our tomorrow.
Two entrepreneurs from Mexico; Adrian Lopez Velarde and Marte Cazarez introduced a new product named Desserto which is an organic leather made out of prickly-pear cactus. Their sole intention behind the product was to create a product that will save the lives of animals and the product indeed seems to be successful.
Desserto is partially biodegradable and meets the technical specifications required by the fashion, leather goods, furniture, and automotive industries. The material has flexibility, breathability, the durability of at least 10 years and is an environmentally friendly alternative to animal leather and synthetic materials.
Speaking about their product to the Fashion Outlet, Lopez Velarde told that “After two years of research and development, we managed to produce a suitable material that complies with the features and technical/mechanical specifications required by those industries that use animal or synthetic leather. Also, thanks to its organic composition, it is breathable, which makes cactus or nopal vegan leather similar to animal leather.”
Desserto was on show at the International Leather Fair Lineapelle in Milan, Italy last month and the creators are already working with major groups in different industries for potential applications.
Many countries including California recently banned using products made out of animals and several famous companies have already decided to stop making further productions using animal leather. So, Desserto will surely be an effective substitute and this product will save the lives of hundreds of animals. We wish the product will receive a good market and if further researches on this field continue, surely we will be able to save our flora and fauna in the world!
